Hallelujah

Square Pegs

Published: March 18, 2008

One of my favorite music blogs alerted me to the cultural resurgence of the song, "Hallelujah."

There are lots of fine versions out there, but in my mind's ear, I'll always hear this version, performed by Jenn Nabb and Chris Holt at the Carter Albrecht memorial show.

It's probably because Cohen just got inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Regardless, the Jeff Buckley version has and will forever reign supreme.

Hauntingly beautiful. Wow. I love the Buckley version, but she wrings the emotion from it without being overwrought. Superb.

I love the Wainwright version, Buckley version. My least favorite is the Cohen versions I've listened to, although I love Cohen, the version I've heard has too much orchestration. The song does better as a spare song. Some of the best lyrics anywhere.
Oh, and I like anything sung by Jenn. Her singing at the Dallas observer awards last year was extraordinary.
