This American Life economic disaster
Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on October 6, 2008
For those (like me) who coasted through their college econ class with a brilliant exegesis of the pricing strategy behind Guns n' Roses Use Your Illusion two-disc release, and therefore failed to learn any actual economics:
Friday's episode of This American Life is a must-listen (and far better than 60 Minutes' attempt last night).
I recommend listening with a stiff drink or a favorite security blanket in hand. You'll need it.
(Hat tip to Jeff Jarvis.)

Here is a transcript from part of that show for those who prefer the written word: http://www.thislife.org/extras/radio/...
Highly recommended.

I thought the 60 Min. show was pretty good. Sorry I missed this one. I'll have to give it some attention at work today.
Not only should Peggers get a stiff drink and security blankey, as Mike suggests, but I have also gone out and purchased a hat to hang the F' onto and some nifty rose colored glasses. (I thinks it's important to be stylish even in these times of trouble and woe- this IS Dallas after all!!)

Ira Glass knows how to tell a story about how all parties are involved and can interconnect it with humor and insight. It was a great listen and I enjoyed it more than 60 mins.

I wonder if this was the same episode I listened to on NPR this weekend. Pretty good.

After reading the transcript I can confirm this was not the same one. The show I heard Saturday was all about the bailout and what they thought of it and some alternative approaches. Good stuff. I especially like how that show really gets into the topic while leaving out the partisan fluff.

Thanks for the link, Mike. The Giant Pool of Money story by This American Life that is linked to in your link is also a must-listen to understand how the whole sub-prime meltdown happened (Spoiler Alert: it involves a Giant Pool of Money).

PBS' Frontline did an episode on the financial meldown last night. You can view it online here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontli... Riveting stuff.
