Read this if you like the State Fair

Posted By Sarah Blaskovich in Square Pegs on August 7, 2009

We're laughing ourselves silly over the State Fair of Texas' Twitter feeds. If you haven't started following @StateFairofTX, you should. You'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about the impending fair – which spokespeople will proudly tell you is only 49 days away.

The State Fair's witty tweetmeister is Jason Hays, a recent Texas Tech grad who's now the fair's media assistant. Seems the people over there love him: “Let me drop another biscuit in your bowl,” Candis Wheat tells me. (She's one of the communications people who works with Hays.) “He's also done contract work for ESPN.” Hmm. Hays hasn't managed to work too much sports jargon into those tweets, but we'll give him points for it anyway.

Hays has coerced his tweeps into writing poetry about the State Fair, and later uses the word “blitzkrieg.” Here's a sampling of some of our faves as of late:

* Ladies and Gents, now in the gates Sylvester StaLOIN!! Pig races are back at the fair! http://tinyurl.com/nwwqxs (about 21 hours ago from web)

* StateFairOfTXHaiku "Homework for tonight / work on haikus till midnight / creativity! " http://tinyurl.com/lho4cv (5:32 p.m. August 5)

* SFoT twitter haiku contest! http://tinyurl.com/lho4cv Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, hey even tell your cat!! (12:03 p.m. August 5)

* A blitzkrieg of creative arts photos are coming your way! *Reminder* Registration and entry fees are due tomorrow by 5! (2:37 p.m. July 30)

* A big State Fair welcome to @Weaselicious! (3:29 p.m. July 20)

* What has the head of a sheep, mane of a horse, body of a pig, wings of a duck, tail of a turkey, and the horns of a longhorn? (11:21 July 17)

Answer: @lonestarthrills Winner winner.....Woofus dinner! http://twitpic.com/ann2o (11:34 a.m. July 17)

* @ANDYVILL Have you ever tried the deep-fried latte? Pretty good.... (4:25 p.m. July 13)

So that's that. Wheat tells me the State Fair crew "lovingly refers to him as 'the lad.'

"He’s a lot of fun, and we’re delighted you asked. Have y’all been working on your haikus??? That was his idea, too.”

Of course.
