Sarah put “on the spot” on AM radio
Posted By Sarah Blaskovich in Square Pegs on August 17, 2009
On Sunday, I sat in as a guest on KLIF's “On the Spot,” my first radio show. You may have cleverly surmised that the show puts people “on the spot” for an hour of all-over-the-place banter between polar opposite hosts David Yates and Erin Covert. I learned many things, but most importantly: Don't talk between commercial breaks until you know you're s'posed to.
The show was a really good time. I'll say that first. David and Erin were welcoming -- even as David rushes in to start the show at 12:06 p.m. every Sunday. (No idea why the weird time; that's just how it goes.) Erin was calmly sitting there with her notes, as usual, waiting on David.
This week's banter started with a crazy single mom in University Park who took her four kids out of school for a year so they could travel overseas. They're learning “on the road,” which the mom thinks will teach them much more than they learned in the classroom. I could relate: I lived in London for a time and learned more about life, love, and everything in between than I could have back at home. David and Erin invited the woman's travel agent on the show to give us the rundown about how he put it all together. We heard lots of great things, but couldn't twist the guy's arm to tell us how much a year of foreign travel could possibly cost a family of five. (Or, more importantly, where in the heck this woman got all the cash without having a job.)
Then it was my turn; David started by asking me all about Pegasus -- no prodding needed! I shared that our numbers are KILLING most other local websites who are attempting the same thing. David was already on our side; he'd been keeping tabs on Pegasus for some time.
Then, after a commercial break, it was back to Pegasus. I could talk all day! This time we talked about a story I wrote last week detailing the work of a secretive man who created DFWSalaries.com, a website that unabashedly shares city employees' salaries who work in Dallas-Fort Worth. David is fascinated by this, and Erin isn't sure. One of the highlights for David was that we even had a call-in from a guy who's a city of Dallas firefighter. David boldly asked his last name so he could look up his salary, and the guy provided it. We were delighted.
Then here comes the not-related-to-Pegasus learning experience: When it was time to break for commercial, I waited 3 seconds and then began gabbing about another feature of DFWSalaries.com. I thought it might make good fodder for when we're back on-air in two minutes. Turns out, I was speaking into a microphone that may or may not have still been on (even though I thought it was a commercial break). No serious harm there. It's not like I gave away the DFWSalaries guy's name or anything -- though David did ask -- but I was clearly a radio novice. Next time I'll keep mum until David does the big swooping arms signal, which means it's time to talk.
We can't be sure about all that until I get a copy of the podcast, but I'll post when I get it. Despite that, I'm glad to say that being put “on the spot” with David and Erin isn't near as abrasive as they make it sound. Here's hoping we make news with them again.

Interesting, until I read this:
<i>David and Erin invited the woman's <b>travel agent</b> on the show to give us the rundown about <b>how he put it all together.</b></i>
Killed it dead. How the hell are you teaching these kids anything if you can't even plan the trip yourself?
Also, Sarah, your link to the <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2009/aug/10/new-dallas-fort-worth-website-posts-all-city-emplo/">DFWsalaries article</a> is busted atm. =p
