Denny’s freebie puts Dallas media in royal tizzy

Square Pegs

Published: February 3, 2009

Is there nothing going on today or is Dallas' media scene so pitiful that people waiting in line at Denny's qualifies as news? It sure doesn't seem like free pancakes deserve an announcement, a follow-up news item (using the hackneyed "Denny's hitting grand slam"), another item about what to tip, an announcement on a competing media blog, AND an item groveling for user feedback. Is there no shame? All this after it was advertised on SuperBowl. Seriously, enough already.

Besides, for Denny's-related news, it's hard to beat this item from onion.com.

Someone asked if I wanted to go at lunchtime, I laughed at them. After lunch they said the line was around the block (and they obviously went elsewhere).

Sorry, knew every hillbilly within a 75 mile radius would waste the gas and their time to stand in line for this. I've got, oh, pretty much everything better to do.

This story says that the chain gave away more than 2 million breakfasts in the eight-hour promotion. The story says that the goal in a campaign like this is a 1% response, and there were 98 million viewers of the Superbowl, so that's nearly 2%.

Overall, the campaign cost $5 million (including the Superbowl ad). The estimated cost of the breakfast itself is between $1 and $1.50. (It sells for $5.99.)

Ikea cinnamon rolls.... mmmmm. That place truly is evil.

So how often is Dave-o able to escape with just a breakfast on his ticket and not a new cabinet stowable combination futon/entertainment center/juicer and retractable cable organizer?

The only time I've actually eaten the breakfast was when they were giving it away for free on black Friday. Their phone system said they opened at 8, but they weren't actually planning on opening until 10. I left with a hot meal, a cold nose, and a bed frame.
