Moving day

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on February 26, 2009

On May 16, 2005, I took possession of my first office space. Sure I'd been in offices for years, and executed a number of office moves for my employers, but this was the first office for the new business I was starting alongside a trio of lieutenants. Even with salvaged furniture from one of my pals in the disaster reclamation business, it was a big step up from the coffeeshops and purloined conference rooms we'd been using for our first couple months.

Those original three musketeers are gone, although much of the team we built over the next year remains. We've worked for free and for pay and at times for reasons we couldn't even articulate.

From the beginning, things were spartan -- even when we graduated from coffee tables to Ikea desks and wall clocks, creating space for as many as 25 people.

Over the last four years, these walls have seen a lot. They've seen, by my estimate, about fifty employees at various times. They were home to our first TV interview. They've seen many of the area's local musicians (along with several attendant noise complaints). They saw the first video interview of Tom Leppert's mayoral campaign. They've been privvy to plans, schemes, laughter, tears, parties and a couple all-out brawls. We've worked and slept here. We've been under four different corporate entities. I've easily had some both the best and the darkest days of my professional career here.

This weekend, we make our first office move. We're going to bigger space, space that was actually planned for us. It's a big step up from the fire-marshall-daunting shoestrings and bubblegum setup we have now. We're not going completely "Uptown" with this move, but it is certainly a big step towards having a professional, if still immature, company environment. We even have a real conference room. For the first time in years I'll have an office with a door. We'll no longer have to smell burning hair from the plastic surgeon next door. We may even have sufficient electrical outlets for our power-hungry computers and affiliated gizmos.

I'm really psyched about the new space -- It gives us more working room, space for more people and room to grow as we expand towards other cities. But there'll always be something special to me about this first rag-tag office.

We'll be updating contact info as the weekend goes on, but suffice to say that until middle of next week, email is the best way to reach us.

Awww…I have this whole scene playing in my head ~

~ Mike having the obligatory moment after everyone has gone, zoom in to the picture in his hand as it floats to the floor…It’s a man beating a dead horse…lights go out and you hear the click of the lock and the rattle of the keys. Needs theme song and tissues!

Are you AIG's realtor? snap Seriously, though - holy lol @ a craigslist ad for the office space.

I extend my congrats to the whole crew for somehow putting up with me this long. Even though I didn't make my presence known until past what I think was the half-way point, my parents are envious. Hopefully our upcoming years will be as magical as the last!

As long as it's not farther out into the city, I'm good!

Just don't forget the clocks. And grand opening (new spot) and grand closing (old spot) parties are required. just so ya know..

Thanks, everyone, for the kind wishes:

New digs are the North Dallas Bank building @ Preston and LBJ. The Craigslist posting is no joke-- we felt it was important that we cohabitate with our new owners, but we still have a year and a half on our existing lease. We thought one of our neighbors was going to take it on, but that didn't pan out, so that's why we're seeking a sublease.

We vacated Glen Lakes yesterday and as I type, I believe Eron and Joe are overseeing the load-in @ the new HQ. Pictures TK on Monday...

Why the hell didn't you take that sign with you? New digs need some kind of indication that you are, in fact, you.

Don't recall the specific name on the plate atm, but Christ...I'm glad Curotolo was walking in the hall otherwise I would have probably just started randomly walking in to neighboring businesses (couldn't remember exact suite number other than 500's and you're not in the building directory under the P's).

Killing me.

But seriously, current sign is quite insufficient imo. Safe to say I'm a regular around here and I had no clue name on the sign is in any way related to y'all (I'm guessing new corporate?).
