Crazy local woodpecker thinks it’s springtime - and he ain’t alone

Posted By John Meyer in Square Pegs on January 3, 2009

I was standing out in the back yard taking in the bizarre (though not entirely unwelcome) January warmth when I heard a knocking - coming not from my chamber door (because I have neither a chamber nor a door), but rather from the next-door neighbor's stately sycamore.

Turns out the knocker was a woodpecker, hammering away on a really nicely-constructed hole up near the top of the tree where it has recently been topped.

What the heck, I thought? I'll head back into the house and see how quickly I can gear up with the telephoto and see if the red-headed chappie (actually a "red-bellied woodpecker," latinate Melanerpes carolinus, if you want to get technical on the subject) was still hanging around.

He was.

Thanks, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (and EF 1.4x II Extender)!

Wow, at first I thought the headline was,"Crazy local peckerwood..."

Of course, that would discribe most of the male population of Dallas.

Russ forwarded along this snap of his Tawakoni-resident bluebirds (eastern variety):

We don't see these in our urban environment very often; they prefer more open spaces and are more prevalent to the east and north of Dallas.

John, you mean by being a crazy local?

And safe to say, Lisa's partying was not confined to New Years
