People are noticing Pegasus News!
Posted By Sarah Blaskovich in Square Pegs on July 9, 2009
Today was a big day. While Mike Orren, founder of Pegasus News, was finishing up a civic commitment at jury duty, his civil service outside of courtroom rippled around town: NBCDFW.com named Pegasus News one of the “big media players” in DFW.
In their nice little bit about us, they also named Mike one of their “25 Most Interesting People in DFW,” just behind Tony Romo. (Confession: We're not actually sure if the list was numbered or not, but Mike was in the second slot, and we think he's at least the second-most interesting person 'round these parts.)
We'll let NBCDFW.com put it in their own words: “Customizable and fully featured to tailor to the reader, PegasusNews is a way for the average reader to learn the most they can about the stories that interest them. With that lofty goal, it's no wonder industry magazines have taken notice of the small but plucky site -- and Orren's contributions to the way news is gathered and presented.”
They talk about how all our stuff is geocoded and how our iPhone app is downright awesome. They say Mike started kicking around techie ideas that were certainly before his time –- and they predict those ideas will someday be a model that most every website and media source use. You can read the entire thing here, including new to-come features for our quickly evolving site.
Thanks, NBCDFW.com! Maybe we really do have something going on here.

Yeah, Scott, there's a lot of this "genie-back-in-the-bottle" mentality from "old media" and certain lawmakers right now. You're going to see a lot of newspapers going behind paywalls online in coming months.
I, for one, am licking my chops -- and I'm not alone. No one has yet had any success in stemming the flow of online information (music industry, anyone)? These attempts will only accelerate the demise of those who think that protectionism will save them. I suspect that at the same time, they'll put opaque windows on the newspaper racks to stop people from reading the headlines without paying.

Mike, While you "lick your chops" how will the demise of the news media (which is what we are talking about) help anyone?
In fact, the demise of local media such as local newspapers (that started way before jane and joe America knew what the tubes of the internets were) has barely been lessened by the free local net news as it is. Mind you this is coming from someone involved in free net local news.

I'm not licking chops at the demise -- I'm happy about the opportunity that will provide for local online businesses to further close the gap and, hopefully, enable more local news production overall. That's where I think the world is going, after an interim dark age of less coverage while the business models cross each other. Anything that accelerates that process can only be good.
