TED’s coming to visit

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on July 22, 2009

I've been meaning to mention this for a while -- I'm damn near giddy about the upcoming TEDxSMU event October 10. Cheryl Hall's notice of it in the DMN reminded me today.

TED stands for "Technology, Entertainment, Design," and is an ongoing series of conferences where both famous and not-so-famous thinkers share their "ideas worth spreading" in a series of short lectures. I first learned about it a few years ago from my pal Sunny Vanderbeck, and was always jealous of those who could afford its high pricetag. A couple of years ago they started putting the TED Talks online and the ability to watch them on my TV was a prime motivator in my setting up a Boxee-hacked AppleTV at home.

It seems that TED has authorized the hosting of unauthorized TED events and the SMU conference looks to be one of the first.

Cost to attend will be $100, but you have to apply for one of a limited number of seats.

Here's a couple sample talks to give you the vibe:

Clay Shirky on the impact of Social Media:

And this, from the architect of the Wyly Theater:

$100? Damn, that's pricey.

Well worth the cost if it is at all similar to the original format. You can sign up for a free online account and have access to hundreds of incredible speakers on a variety of topics.

Not to mention the original conferences range from $3,000 to $6,000. So, yeah, $100 – Not so bad.

I hope it's not about games. They're usually quite useful. Yet another Guild Hall advertisement doesn't interest me.

It's not all about gaming. Culture, Science, the arts and so on.

Really? I missed that part of the lecture.

At any rate, hopefully you will all sign up for TED.com and see the wide range of facinating topics they have available. I would love to see the SMU version but I detest those "Let me tell you how amazing I am" applications - Unless you are waving a paycheck under my nose, I would rather not.

So now you're Mexican again.
They let you back in?

It's SMU. Just flash your card and they have to let you in.

Well, I do pass SMU everyday I'm going back home from UTD. I should use my Mexican crossing skills to get inside.

Wait, does my Single Mother Card trump his Mexican card? Since we're playing it that way.
