I’m a “no” on the “No” campaign’s marketing, which means “yes” to the hotel on which I’m a “no” even though I’m a “no” on Prop 1

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on March 19, 2009

First, I'm sure I'm not the first one to point this out, but why is it that every time Dallas has a referendum, "No" means "Yes" to the project planned and vice-versa? Makes my head hurt.

My personal view on this is complex -- I don't think the hotel is a good idea, but I do think we need to either operate as a representative democracy or a direct one, not picking and choosing issues as we go.

That said, the mailer I got yesterday from Vote No Dallas! (with whom I think I agree, because they are saying no to overturning the thing that I'm against by changing the charter, which I'm also against -- ugh!) is one of the tackiest and most fallaciously fearmongering campaign pieces I've ever seen. (Click to enlarge)

Wow. Mad Max beyond ReunionBall. That could actually be fun. Except that it's all a plot by them damn Yankees to render Our Beloved City into nothing more than a scrapheap. (Funny, I didn't know Harlan Crow was from New York.)

The leaning Tower of Reunion isn't a horrible idea. I've never gotten the Reunion ball as an attraction, so mark that one as an improvement.

Clearly, this shoots down the arguments of the Vote Yes (no to the hotel) folk that a Convention Hotel is detrimental to the hotel business. Hell, those New Yorkers knocked out half the windows in the Hyatt!

Those damn Yankees apparently even feasted on the cattle at Fuel City. I bet they even used a vinegar-based sauce and then left the skull to taunt us.

And I, for one, welcome our gigantic vulture overlords.

If I thought there was a wink or a punchline in this piece, I'd tip my hat. But reading the copy inside, I'm led to believe that my very freedom to shop in cowboy boots and drink wine at racially-mixed upscale events is threatened by an alliance of Freemasons, Stonecutters and Skull-and-Bonesers trying to punish us for our participation in the Confederacy. (You get your hyperbole, and I get mine.)

Come on y'all -- I'm your audience, and my (limited) intelligence is insulted by this campaign. I still don't believe in the hotel or in the charter changes proposed, but propaganda like this makes me question everything coming out of the campaign. (One good ad-hominem deserves another.)

Note: I'm not saying that the Vote Yes so we can say no to the hotel side is any better. I just haven't been treated to their postal propaganda yet.

I couldn't agree more. I got the same mailer last night. Up til now I'd been fairly neutral in my opinion and have agreed with both sides on various points. This, however, was one of the most insulting pieces of trash I think I have ever received in my mailbox. NY unions are going to come down here and turn Dallas into WW3? WTF!? How dumb do they think we are. I think I'm voting yes now out of spite.

Plus, I gotta say it'd be cool to have our own "leaning tower of Reunion". Think of the tourism! Vote yes!

Ok - Now I am really confused on the whole yes/no thing but that picture...That actually brought tears to my eyes. Is that the bank building on the right that looks like it has been broken in half?

Reunion Tower is pretty dull but it does add a certain interesting something to the skyline. imo.

Great photo op of escaping New York Dallas, while...yes it is now a good old boy corrupt pumpkin...filled with double talk and takers comming in by the thousands. or is it to beceome a real 21st century city.... Dallas, has always tried to become another place in another time, the developers and fathers had this vision in the late 1850s with the building of the Cockrell Hotel, while they would promote, "Best hotel this side of the New Orleans"..

And this theme of the new Dallas, on Sunday it is a ghost town,

So we, who live her... know the truth while those who came here can pay for the lies....then again, I am saying no, abolish the hotel ideal located on the old Whore House Reservation which used to be old Mill Creek...buried beneath...and Belo may sell some land too..A/T, Born and grazed in New York Dallas..

That much "shopping" just makes me miss our "Everywhere Else Girl"

There she is!

One question.... So Dallas is in a "Boom" now? I get confused pretty easily, but I was kinda solid on that one, or so I thought.

Looks like BoA really came out worse than Comerica.

How about some lasers?

Now all that's missing from that picture is a giant eagle head looming over the cityscape -- with a tear flowing from its eye.

Are you seriously asking or just being funny, Mike?

It's to trick/confuse Dallas voters into voting for said project (which is what happened with the toll road vote). It's a sleazy tactic -- there's a name for it, which escapes my memory right now -- and it works.

The cynic in me says this hotel vote will pass, because of this tactic.
