At-Home Dinner of a Food Writer (with photos)

Posted By Teresa Gubbins in Square Pegs on May 18, 2009

An acquaintance wondered what a food writer like myself cooked for dinner and wanted to see photos, so I thought I'd share my "foraging".

I stopped on the way home at the Kroger at Preston and Campbell because that's kindof a Jewish neighborhood and I was in the mood for rye toast. They had five kinds of rye bread! Jewish rye, Russian rye, seedless rye, dark pumpernickel rye, and whole-grain rye by Pepperidge Farm. (They had a BIG selection of Pepperidge Farm breads, popular in the Northeast. Note to self!)

For my second course, I picked up a unique angel cake I had never seen before: Sour Cream angel cake (artificially flavored). Manager's Special so it was only $1.19. Such a bargain.

When I got home, I opened the package of rye bread by untying the twisty and cutting one edge of the plastic wrapper with kitchen shears. I extracted two slices, which I popped in the toaster. When it was done, I carefully spread unsalted butter on one side until it was mostly covered, although I left a few places dry, to keep the slice crispy. Délicieux!

Haven't yet tried the cake, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will involve my opening the package, cutting a chunk out, and placing it on a plate. What do you think? What did you have for dinner? Was it good? Have any leftovers?

Pavel Lishin says:

I gotta say, I thought dinner would be more than "toast".

I made chicken stir fry, and when that runs out, it'll be time for borsch.

If you could see how skinny she is, you might not be surprised by the toast-and-water regimen.

Funny AND skinny?

Where was she when I was dating? (Ok, probably preschool - don't rub it in.)

Jason, get in line. I want to date her too. TG, I cooked dinner last night but my BF wouldn't let me take pictures. He is sick of me taking notes, pictures, and tweeting every time we eat. Nobody understands us, TG. A loaf of bread or a plain baker is a heavenly meal for "professional" diners. Don't you agree? Have you eaten a plain baked potato while watching Law & Order? Have you been to Five Sixty?

Toasted Jewish rye is always better with a big pile of hot, fresh, greasy pastrami on top. Sure wish I could find a good local source.

It was Ragu chunky garden style at my house last night with italian turkey sausage. I'm simmering pinto beans today. For some odd reason, pinto beans with corn bread are my husband's favorite meal.

Last night was the first chance we've had to cook in four or five days so we cranked up the grill. The chicken was slathered in Lawry's Hawaiian Marinade and turned out very good. We also had grilled pineapple with a super yummy yogurt sauce which goes a little something like this..

8 oz yogurt, 1/4 cup orange juice, 2 tsp orange zest, 4 cloves garlic, 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint, salt & pepper

Potato salad made with chopped dill and a tad of mayo followed the grilled portabellos which were stuffed with spinach and mozarella.

Makes my Honey Nut Cheerio's look pretty darn sumptuous. Let alone the toasted bagel with whipped cream cheese that was the first course. Does this belie the adage that some things are better left to the professionals?

lol TG and NN are too much. Remind me to stay on your good side. Can I start calling you two Statler and Waldorf? ;)

FWIW I had broiled cod and swiss chard for dinner, washed down with vintage 2009 diet Sprite.

I usually save toast dinner for Friday nights, to celebrate the work week ending.

I truly understand the toast thing. I like warm wheat toast and peanut butter, so melty smooth! And just so you know, I almost never eat dessert.

Rye toast is a pretty decent meal, but I would have used salted butter. (Having actually shared a meal when TG lived in Boston, I bet she snuck some ice cream later that evening...)
