Free Cone Day confusion

Posted By Alan Cohen in Soundcheck on April 25, 2006

Today is Ben & Jerry's free cone day. But if you live in Arlington then you'll have to drive all the way to Plano to receive your free Cherry Garcia. Thats cause the Arlington locations have decided not to participate this year. How can any Ben & Jerry's justify taking free cone day away from the good people in Arlington, TX. You might as well take Christmas away from them too while you are at it. Ya' know what - Arlington locations have lost the right to be referred to as Ben & Jerry's. Until you start giving away some Chunky Monkey, you are just another Blue Bell to me. (No offense to the Blue Bell people - its a fine product you sell).

Ben Cohen, Alan Cohen, something phish-foody is up. Just because uncle Ben believes ice cream should be provided to each according to his need, doesn't mean you have to take up the family cause.

My brother is just trying to bring our sibling rivalry into the public eye. He is still mad about when he was 8 and I was 4 and he called me a "doodoohead" and I cried and my mom felt bad for me so she bought me ice cream and left him with nothing.
It was as if I lived in Plano and he lived in Arlington. No free cone for you David.

The Arlington locations are located within Six Flags. They are not participating because Six Flags won't allow it.

Isn't free cone day all about raising money for the environment? Seems to me like its bad policy for Six Flags not to support that.

No, actually Free Cone Day started 28 years ago when Ben and Jerry (the actual guys) agreed that they should give something back to the customers that supported them if they made it through their first year in business. Now it has become an annual event.

The company certainly has roots and ties to environmentalist issues including funding new experimental ways of refrigeration to keep our ice cream cold using sound waves. Our environmental positions are at http://www.benjerry.com/our_company/a....

Now, you are correct that a lot of the stores raise money. Each franchisee can decide if they want to partner with a charity for the event. In Plano, we like to support local kids and partner with the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center. They take action to identify, protect, and improve the lives of abused and neglected children. We raise thousands for them on Free Cone Day. We certainly don't require anyone to donate, but a lot of people will drop a buck or some change in the bucket. The main thing is that we try to increase awareness about child abuse as April is Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Thanks for being a fan and don't hesitate to drop by our store.

I agree. My Ben and Jerry's will be bought exclusively at Preston and Plano Parkway from this point forward.

Thanks for the info Hunter. You have put the Chunky back in my Monkey.
