Arlington church tries to stop hip-hop
Posted By Alan Cohen in Soundcheck on August 3, 2006
Arlington's Cornerstone Baptist Church took a stand against hip-hop culture earlier this week. The church, as a community, destroyed CDs, DVDs, and other items that they feel promote hip-hop culture. According to FOX 4, the church is using the "recent shootings allegedly sparked by a certain song played in a nightclub" as proof of the negative. Of course, FOX 4 is referring to the incident at El Angel Club which sparked controversy surround the 'Lil John song "Put Yo Hood Up." Later in the story FOX 4 refers to the incident again as "a shooting tied to a hip-hop song."
Frankly, what bothers me most about this story is the one sided approach that FOX 4 gave this story. It makes sense to me that if the El Angel Club shooting was the justification that the church used to explain their actions, FOX 4 did the right thing by reporting that. However, I would have liked to see them take the next step and talk about how the theory that Lil John's song sparked violence has since been discredited.
As was first reported by Michael Davis on the Dallas Progress Blog, it seems clear that the violence started before the Lil John song was ever played.
I just would have liked to see FOX 4 go the extra mile with this story. But maybe I just feel that way cause I disagree with the Arlington church on this one.

From Michael Davis' July 25th blog post about the shootings: "I do appreciate Shaun Rabb of Fox 4 News. He used his Sunday morning show, Insights, to have a forum with young people expressing their views on what happened and why these things occur in our society."
Just wanted to point out that some people at FOX 4 are trying to take a wider lens to these kinds of topics.

Disclaimer: Religious opinion
Bah ... churches like this do more to hurt the cause of Christianity than hip hop ever could.

Yea, but I guess I've come to expect that religious organizations will do things like this from time to time....and I probably should expect that media organizations will report like this as well.....but both still bother me

it's the same area in which Aggtown Fightz was filmed
this very same church had "Aggtown Fellowship" on their billboard all last week.
