Dead Money

Posted By Alan Cohen in Soundcheck on August 11, 2006

So I was reading the DMN sports section over lunch and came across this article discussing how everyone loses when a professional athlete's contract gets bought out by his team.

The following paragraph actually appears in the story:

"When I signed the contract, I pictured myself going down there and winning the Stanley Cup," said former Stars winger Bill Guerin, who will be paid $4.4 million after a buyout this summer. "When you compare that feeling to this one [being bought out], you feel horrible."

BOO FREAKIN HOO, go use your $4.4 million to buy some tissues and wipe your tears away. I'm probably being too hard on Bill Guerin. It would take at least $5.4 million to make up for the shot he took his self-esteem by having his contract bought out.

Todd Maternowski, says:

I think it's a pretty good move for both sides in most cases. Guerin's production dropped from 40+ goals a season to 12, and he disappeared in both playoffs he was in. That was an easy decision to cut him for the Stars and use the money for new free agents. Guerin gets the money, plus is getting paid another $2 mill from his current team, and he gets a fresh start. Makes sense to me.

I will miss Guerin dearly, tho. One of the funniest professional athletes this town has ever seen. His "Gay/Not Gay" ticket bits were great!

Jesse Hughey, says:

Does anyone think it's just a coincidence that a story about the folly of contract buyouts ran the day after the DMN offered buyouts to so many staff members?
