I just found out that Maynard Ferguson passed away. The statement from his management does a much better job of paying tribute to the trumpeter than I ever could.
My memory of Maynard was watching a video interview where he discussed his choice between jazz and classical music. According to Maynard, he turned down the classical conservatories and persued a career in jazz cause the jazz cats just looked like they were having so much fun. I always thought that was a great way of looking at things.

Maynard Ferguson was one of the first jazz artists my Dad introduced to me when I was a kid (he used see Maynard a lot in the Philly jazz scene back in the '60s), and I've been a big fan ever since. I always saw his shows whenever he passed through whatever town I was living in and was never disappointed, even in the later years when he struggled to hit the high notes I marveled at on those recordings my Dad played for me. This is sad news, but I know what I'll be listening to tonight.

My high school brought his band in one year for the final concert guest band. He was a little past his prime at that point, but he could still rip it up. It's too bad he had to have a "stunt double" for some of his playing ... who actually showed him up. Still, Maynard will always be a legend in his own right.
