Superbowl Censorship
Posted By Alan Cohen in Soundcheck on February 7, 2006
There have been some internet reports claiming that the Rolling Stones agreed to censoring their lyrics for the Superbowl halftime show this past Sunday. The most noticeable censorship was when Mick omitted the lyrics "you make a dead man come" from the classic hit Start Me Up. I received an inside scoop that the Stones did not change the lyrics to appease NFL officials, but rather because that line makes Keith Richards self-conscious.

The Stonesâ have a long history of acquiescence to mother [offesnive gerund removed] network censors. It dates back at least to 1967 when that [inappropriate reference to fecal digestion removed] Ed Sullivan requested that the band change the lyrics of âLet's Spend the Night Togetherâ. In the live, televised performance Mick produced some [insulting and possibly discriminatory reference to chromosomal deficiency removed] mumbling that sounded like, "Let's spend some time together." It's nice to see that television censors sense of decency has progressed with the times [though its sarcasm is to be frowned upon, âweâ find nothing patently offensive about the preceding sentence]. Yesteryearâs nocturnal cuddling is this yearâs necrophilia. At least the internet is still [reference to sexual activity, or lack thereof, removed] territory for corporate censors.
