You poser, that’s not real punk rock

Its not up on the Observer website yet, but I loved Jesse Hughey's preview of Summer Blowout Punk Festival this Friday. Jesse talks about hte merits of this free show compared to $16 you'd pay to see the legendary Rancid.
Punk rock is so totally free. Punk rock is not $16 a pop. Pop is $16 a pop.
If you pay $16 for a show, how are you ever going to afford your wallet-chain?

Todd Maternowski, says:
Rancid takes more cheapshots from music writers than any other real punk band... too bad, too, 'cause they're amazing and they put on a great live show. Well worth the $16.

The worth of the band is not the issue, its more a matter of what's more punky. Now there is a good Punky Brewster line here somewhere but I can't seem to conjure it up.

When Rancid came through here a few years back, they had a roadie who must've been 6-foot-8, 98% covered in tattoos (including a nice "HATED" across the adam's apple) and able to lift two buicks without difficulty. I'd pay $16 to see Jesse Hughey tell this guy Rancid's not "punk".

I'd pay at least $17.50 and the service charge.

Todd- How much would you pay to see me do so wielding a straight razor and wearing a fanny pack? C'mon, it was just a light-hearted story poking a little fun at a successful band as well as the punker-than-thou purist mentality. I like Rancid and Street Dogs, too.

Fanny pack's an extra $4.25. Not that I should be talking... I'm probably seeing Camera Obscura and their Garden State-esque pop that night next door in the Tea Room. Rancid's a good band, they've lived the 'punk' life, I don't think they should be punished for their success. Green Day & Ashley Simpson, on the other hand...
