More Reasons to dislike Sambuca’s

Posted By Alan Cohen in Soundcheck on March 28, 2006

Recently I wrote a blog post that led me to comment on why I did not think Sambuca was a very good place to catch a jazz show.

A helpful reader of TexasGigs pointed me towards this - article from the Dallas-Fort Worth Professional Musicians Association (Scroll down to Page 4).

According to that article, I'm not the only one who has had bad experiences with Jamye Spurgeon and Rick Wells (yes - thats right - I am not impartial in the least when it comes to the topic of how Sambuca treats musicians). In fairness, Rick Wells no longer works for Sambuca. But Jamye Spurgeon is now at the Uptown location. So if you are dead set on dining at Sambuca, I'd at least recommend Addison.

Kate Mackley, says:

from the newsletter: *"Sambucas’ proprietor Kim Forsythe has refused to meet and discuss with Local 72-147 issues deemed by talented DFW professional musicians to be critical and important. He will now be forced to discuss them openly and in public before a judge in a Dallas courtroom."*

and now, here, as well.

Um, I'm all for exposing bad practices by club owners (or anyone else for that matter), but in fairness I'd like to know the resolution of that 2003 lawsuit before forming an opinion.

I've been told that this was settled out of court before going to trial.
According to the article, the Musicians Union was paying for attorneys to try the case. So I would suggest contacting the Union directly to get more information about the case (http://musiciansdfw.org).
I tried calling just now but its after 5 PM so no one picked up. I'll try again tomorrow morning and report back what I learn.

The Musicians Union had "no comment" at this time. They did request that I call back on April 10th. That is when their President will be back in Dallas.
