Sam Introduces Me to Kelly Hogan

Posted By Cindy Chaffin in TexasGigs - Cindy's Original Blog on March 21, 2006

After the Summer Break Records party I climbed back in my car and headed back over to Jovita's for the Deadman interview and performance.

I arrived very early and the first person I saw was darling Sam Machkovech who promptly rushed over and said "don't you dare leave before you hear this girl." The girl he was speaking of was performing on stage, and I was impressed immediately. So SaMach turned me on to Ms. Kelly Hogan and her awesome brand of twang. Unfortunately, I arrived just as she was into her final song...dammit...but I did fire-up the ol' Microtrack and got most of it recorded.

Sam mentioned that Kelly should be dropping a new album in the next year. I can assure you, I'll be first in line to get my own copy.

Thanks Sam...I owe ya one!

Kelly Hogan rawks! As does virtually every artist on the Bloodshot label.

Sam Machkovech, says:

Kelly will be in town w/ Neko Case in April; she says that she'll open the show with a semi-full band if Schoder/Granada doesn't book another opener in her stead. I'll call Mike in a few days to check on that.

And Bloodshot artists are often good, but their CDs are usually quite blah--never converting the live performances to plastic. A few exceptions, sure...but how many times have you ever dug out a Meat Purveyors CD to listen, really?

Mike Orren, says:

The Bloodshot discs are a mixed bag, I'll grant you. But I love their compilations -- rare that anyone actually puts effort and creativity into a comp, but they always seem to.

And I'd offer discs by Alejandro Escovedo, the Waco Brothers, Detroit Cobras, Yahoos and Legendary Shack Shakers as counter-arguments.
