At first click I was over-joyed to see a feature story on the GREAT Kristy Kruger. This story is long overdue, as Kristy has been a huge talent on the local scene for a long time now. My first experience seeing Kristy live was at the B.W. Stevenson Songwriter Contest - gosh - like 3 or 4 years ago. I remember after her performance I was so taken aback and mesmerized by her talent that Tom Geddie tapped me on the shoulder and said I should "close my mouth..."
Darryl Smyers writes:
"...Kruger's dark and stirring musings should bring the attention and acclaim that her nomadic spirit has previously prevented. Far from a typical self-released set, Songs From a Dead Man's Couch is a startlingly mature work, full of whispered secrets and quiet affections that try to avoid the attention daylight will inevitably bring..." - yeah, what he says - Please Read
Getcherown copy of Songs from a Dead Man's Couch this Friday, May 5th at Standard and Pours.

Oh SaMach...dear, sweet, snarkily-snarky SaMach...
Last Sunday night the D.O. invited the nominees over to Dallas High School for a "Class of 2006" photo for this week's edition. Blair was there - I was not.
Sam gushes over the whole extravaganza (both on Sunday and the forthcoming awards show on Tuesday, May 9th), which was great for a few paragraphs...until..
"...As the session went on, a teenage guy who'd been standing nearby tapped my shoulder. "This is a music thing, then? Are any of them in bands I'd recognize?" I started listing off names of some of the better-known nominees in attendance--the Happy Bullets, Record Hop, Salim Nourallah--and he gave me a blank look, explaining he'd come from out of town for a high school class trip to Dallas. He wanted to know the big names."
Well, damn, buddy. Hearing that was deflating at first, if only because it reminded me of how many people in Dallas have said the same thing (including DOMA co-presenters Pugs & Kelly, the 105.3 FM talk show hosts who admitted on the air a few weeks ago that they'd never heard of most of the nominees). Them's the breaks when you're dealing with the not-so-rewarding world of Dallas independent music, so it's nice when something like the DOMAs can gather some of the best musicians in town, picked from both a public nominating pool and an industry panel, and, well, reward them. Plus, we can always use a reminder that this city's music scene is plenty big, even if some teen jerkass from Washington doesn't think so..."
Wait - "...some teen jerkass from Washington..." didn't know of the Happy Bullets and gets blasted - but Pugs & Kelly, who are local DJ's "...DOMA co-presenters Pugs & Kelly, the 105.3 FM talk show hosts who admitted on the air a few weeks ago that they'd never heard of most of the nominees)..." get invited to co-host?
Let's turn it around Sam - quick...name 3 great local Washington (D.C. I'm assuming) bands! Sheeeeesh.

I hate to keep pickin' on ya Sam - oh who am I kidding - but this one kinda stuck in my craw too...
"...On Friday night, Club Dada's Hard Night's Day happy hour will be followed immediately by a performance from Fishboy. This is a damn good thing, because after the dudes in pink shirts are scared away, we're sure Eric Michener will win over the happy hour crowd..."
I've booked bands who have followed Hard Night's Day at Club Dada over the years - and thank gosh for the spot my friend. The band draws, and draws well. I'll take a bunch of thirsty, elevated income yupsters with or without pink shirts anytime. Also, a perfectly divine band called Teenage Symphony will perform that night as well and should not be missed either.
I'd sure like to see a little more support for the new owners of Club Dada since they've made a huge investment, have made great changes to the venue and the experience, and they are very much supporting the local scene.

Sam redeemed himself somewhat by this suggestion to see...*squeal with delight*...Eisley on Saturday... Go on now and read it

The only time I've ever pee'd on someone's feet was after numerous Mambo Taxis at the original Highland Park Village Mi Cocina - I LOVE Mambo Taxis...oh wait...I did pee on my own feet that time at the 5-year Good Records party when I got to interview Eisley - that time I was sober but I do so LOVE Eisley ....so I suppose for me...pee on feet is a sign of adoration...I love you Sam...

Love the new Dada but those Beatle boys need to write some new material. As for pink shirts, only 'real men' wear them, or are those blouses? I don't know! It's all so confusing. Guess I'll drop by, have a beer or three and study the situation further.
