I Gotsta New Category for the Dallas Observer Music Awards

Posted By Cindy Chaffin in TexasGigs - Cindy's Original Blog on May 8, 2006

I'm really quite surprised that there's not a "Best Sound Person" category in the Dallas Observer Music Awards.

I know from my experiences having managed and booked for bands, as well as plugging into sound boards for optimum quality Podcasts, that we are very much at the mercy of a good sound dude/dudette.

Over the years I've worked with some good ones, and some not-so-good ones. But I know this fer sure - sound quality can make or break a band's performance...as well as the audience perception of the bands - even the bestest bands can come off like they suck if the sound quality is poor.

Comments are below if you'd like to give a shout-out to your favorite sound person! Perhaps they'll add this as a category in next year's awards.

Andre Edmundson and Jon Teague, who trade off sound duties at the Wreck Room, would get my vote(s). Consistently excellent FOH sound from a system that ... has issues ...

What a great idea! The soundman is the unsung hero of the music scene. I nominate James (curtain Club), Art (clearview) and BobCat (dada). But hey, why are you wasting all your good ideas on The Observer. Save it for The 1st Annual TexasGigs.com Music Awards....coming soon!

i would nominate steve duncan of chem set. working with him in liquid, not only did he make everyone sound good, but i had someone to keep me entertained when the music failed.

That would be a really good one! I'm still upset they eliminated 'roots rock / rockabilly' and combined it to being 'roots/ country' Best 'punk band' would also be cool, if they actually cared about younger artist! Last but not least, The Adventure Club should've been retired years ago.
