Mowing Down Martel - Off-Topic

Posted By Cindy Chaffin in TexasGigs - Cindy's Original Blog on May 22, 2006

I lived off Lower Greenville for years as a younger, singler, gal-about-town. I had a perfectly divine stint on the corner of McCommas and Greenville - and some my-tee-fine days at this little duplex on Martel.

It was awesome, I was a stone's throw from J. Pepe's, The Granada, Aw Shucks and Snuffer's.

So driving back from Good Records on Friday night, I veered off on to my old street to get back to Central Expressway and was deeply disturbed to see that the duplex across the street from my old digs was...gone...

There were signs up and down the street in front of the charming homes and duplexes...

2 doors down from my old crib was the beginnings of what looked like something straight from the bland streets of Plano...

Back when I lived off Lower Greenville, the homes shot up in value in the mid-90's. People wanted to purchase the homes built in the 20's, 30's and 40's to restore. THAT was the point of living in that area. Now they are just bulldozing them down to build crap like the above. I don't get it. I really don't.

Robert Wilonsky said it best in a recent post on Unfair Park:

" Eight years ago, which is an eternity in a town where yesterday’s landmarks are tomorrow’s parking lots..." Read the rest

...sigh...

They all want a McMansion Happy House. Each one comes with a toy.

speaking of martel, would you happen to recall an outfit named curtis? those guys were (curtis has since disbanded) pals and we were constantly over at j. pepe's. this would've been the second house, literally, behind pepe's. just wondering.

I didn't know Curtis, but they would have been about literally across the street from me.
