Full Week of Great Shows! (Video Previews!!)
What a week of shows! Here is where I would go if I wasn't going to be silently meditating in my apartment all week...(just joking, I've seen 209 shows in 2006 and still going strong!)
Wednesday August 2:
Whitebread Picnic & Fatty Lumpkin @ The Green Elephant - Come out to jam with some Widespread Panic tunes and then Grapevine's own Fatty Lumpkin throws down to close the night! Anyone who was at last week's Widespread Panic afterparty knows what I am talking about. These guys are good. I've put this up before, but here is a video of them playing Go Funk Yourself:
Thursday August 3:
Sorta & Dave Little @ Bend Studio - This is Chris Holt's first show as an official member of Sorta. When the Dallas Observer Music Award winning "Best Act Overall" adds the 2 time defending Musician of the Year, its must see material.
Fishing For Comets (8pm), Travis Hopper (9pm), Porter Davis (10pm) & Marcus Rubio (11pm) @ Club Dada - Fishing For Comets (DOMA best Folk/Acoustic 2005 & 2006) kicks off their tour of duty as Club Dada's Artist in Residence for August! Here is video of FFC playing "Finer Stutterings" from Standard & Pours recently:
Ned Lane @ Cretia's on McKinney - This still is my favorite weekly event. Cas Haley and Travis Brink sit with acoustic guitars (and sometimes a bass and a conga drum) and cover lots of great reggae (Marley, Sublime), bluegrass (Monroe, Dylan), and even rap (Eminem). Here is a song they played with Jonathan Pearce (Sax) who sits in regularly with Cas & Travis:
You will also probably get to hear some of Cas's original Woodbelly material, seen below with the full band:
Friday August 4:
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with Trey Anastasio @ Smirnoff - enough said. (I'll be there)
The Whigs, Red Monroe & Voot Cha Index @ Gypsy Tea Room - each of these bands has come very highly recommended and I would love to check them out! If not for the Tom/Trey show & the Club Dada lineup, I would be at this one. (Contrary to popular belief, I can only be in one place at a time.)
Hard Nights Day, Millicent Friendly, Escort Service & Chemistry Set @ Club Dada - 4 local favorites...if I wasn't seeing Tom Petty & Trey Anastasio, I would be at this one!
Rhythm, Woodbelly, 3 am Live & Not Called Common @ Curtain Club - check out this video of Woodbelly playing Stevie Wonder's Living For The City with Derrick of 3 am Live:
Saturday August 5 - OLOSPO, The Enormous Magic Verb & Kunek @ Hailey's in Denton! If you've read anything I've written, you know I'll be making the drive up 35 for this one! Fronted by Chris Holt (DOMA Musician of the Year 2005, 2006 & Instrumentalist of the Year 2006), this is a rock show you dont want to miss! This is their last show until the August 18th Granada Anniversary show. Here are Wishful Sinking & Slither from CD World in Addison last Saturday afternoon:
Sunday August 6:
Rebirth Brass Band @ Gypsy Tea Room - A New Orleans institution, they put on great live shows. Last year, they had hometown fav, Erykah Badu on stage with them!
Dallas Portal @ Lakewood Bar & Grill - A collection of DFW are jambands get together to throw down on a Sunday evening around 8pm. Last week, at the first ever Dallas event (they have been going on in Austin for a little while), both Fatty Lumpkin guitar players were there along with most of A Partial Freakout with some UNT Jazz students thrown in for good measure.
I have had this week circled on my calendar for some time now its finally here!
Have fun! Be safe! See you there!

Distract Yourself With JJ & The Rogues Video!
As some may know, I had about 6 weeks worth of pictures and video saved on an external hard drive. When that hard drive stopped communicating with my home computer, I thought I had lost all of that content. The great riddle of the external hard drive has officially been solved! (Look forward to more and more video...I have a ton of Chris Holt/Olospo/Ned Lane/Woodbelly/etc video left to share)
Here are some of the videos from JJ & The Rogues from May at Club Dada that were trapped in the hard drive:
I Was Catching You:

These guys put on a great show live, go check them out!

Videos From My Vault! (What Made Milwaukee Famous, The Transcenders, Romp Almighty)!
Way back on July 6, 2006, What Made Milwaukee Famous played the Gypsy Tea Room. (you might have read about it) I recorded them playing "Judas", which is going to be on their new album coming out August 22.
On July 14th, the Transcenders rocked Club Dada and I caught their awesome cover of "Dixieland Delight" on video.
On July 19th, Romp Almighty played Club Dada and I recorded them playing "Leaves & Sticks".
Have fun! Be safe! Enjoy the video! See you out there!

Show Recommendations Through Saturday!
Summer is my favorite time for live music! Because there are so many shows from which to choose, here are some of my recommendations. (I am leaving some of the Friday shows out...check the Texasgigs.com Best Bets section for those) Note that Club Dada's Wednesday lineup has two changes.
Tonight (07.19.06): Club Dada hosts its weekly y'allternative Wednesday, featuring Dylan Sneed, Smokewagon .44 (subbing for Eastwood) and Romp Almighty (subbing for Bleu Edmondson).
Thursday (07.20.06): Cretia's on McKinney will host Ned Lane (as it does every Thursday starting around 9:30 and playing all night) and that's where you will be able to find me. Club Dada will host about a dozen bands! Joe Bonnamassa is playing the Granada Theater.
Friday (07.21.06): Bend Studio will host Rahim Quazi, Five Times August and Doug Burr, and I will be there. The Granada Theater has a large local lineup featuring Hendrick, Green River Ordinance, the Golden Falcons and Nooner. Ray Davies (of the Kinks) is at the Gypsy Tea Room. Check the Best Bets for more going on...
Saturday (07.22.06): Woodbelly & Blues Traveler are in the Gypsy Tea Room Ballroom (where I will be with my camera)! Club Dada is hosting the Hero to Zero's Third Anniversary Benefit featuring Fishing For Comets, Jayson Bales, The Dead Thing, Handclaps & Harmonies, Household Names and more.
I will add more shows to this if I discover an oversight in the future...
Have fun! Be safe! See you there!

The Real Deal with the Tribute Band? (Steely Dan Fans be aware!!!)
Word on the street is that this Thursday night at Club Dada, some of the same musicians from Wednesday night's Steely Dan & Michael McDonald show @ Nokia (its a best bet) will be sitting in with Naked Lunch, the accomplished Steely Dan Tribute band.
After the Dan set(s), The Fine Line Live's Listening To: series will present These United States and Paleo. (click "Thursday night at Club Dada" above for complete event details)
Have fun! Be safe! See you there!
