FFC, Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez, Jayson Bales, The Transcenders & 2 Sets of Topaz!

Posted By Michael Harberg in On Tour In My Own Bed on June 10, 2006

Friday nights are becoming the highpoint of my week! (except for this week... OLOSPO @ CLUB DADA TONIGHT!!!!) Lets get to it!

My musical evening started at the Granada Theater, with Fishing For Comets opening for Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez. FFC was really cool to see with a 6 person lineup (and the talent of the Granada Theater's lighting & sound guys). They played a fun set and everything sounded great.

I thought the sound was better near the stairs to the balcony than in the front rows...Camille Cortinas' voice sounded clear and crisp and Sam Romero's guitar had a nice bite to it. (good call on the place to stand, Chris)

I walked around backstage after Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez started their second set. I turned the corner to find Cas Haley sitting with Jonathan Pearce playing for about 2 people in the parking lot!

After I quickly poked my head into FFC's dressing room to say goodbyes,

I hit the road for the Green Elephant .

I parked at the Green Elephant and walked over to the Barley House (no cover) to say some hellos and to check out the tail end of Jayson Bales & The Revival.

The room was getting crowded as the Transcenders set was approaching, so I said I would be back and walked back to the Green Elephant.

I arrived to discover that Larry would not be playing (dissapointing...), but that in his place Topaz would play 2 sets instead of 1! I have said this before, but Topaz is a bad, bad man. Topaz plays a funky sax that is well complimented by Bobby Perkins on bass. (I love watching the entire band, but those 2 stand out to me.)

At Topaz's setbreak, I walked over to the Barley House to see some of the Transcenders set...

and then walked back to the Green Elephant again...

I caught some pretty cool video of Topaz with Kelyn Crapp (from Fatty Lumpkin) on guitar...SICK! (Hopefully we can send it out as a podcast...the video file is too big for youtube or myspace)

Well, this weeks recap doesn't feel as long as last week's, but I lucked out that all of these shows were within a few blocks of each other. (and didnt have to drive to and from North Richland Hills like last Friday)

I am off to see the Transcenders play an afternoon set at the Dallas City Arts Celebration before my evening @ Club Dada (click the link at the beginning of this post for the info on tonight)!

Have fun! Be safe! See you there!

Keep an eye on the Green Elephant's schedule...Topaz is scheduled there seemingly once a month.
