Weekend Wrapup

Posted By Michael Harberg in On Tour In My Own Bed on June 19, 2006

I spent my Saturday night at Club Dada (again), at the recommendation of a couple of promoter friends of mine. I was told that the guy from one of their favorite Austin bands (What Made Milwaukee Famous) was playing Dada and that I could not miss it. Since I am a bit of a "Live Music Junkie" (in case you have never read any of my writing), I went down to Deep Ellum about 2 hours early to catch the Dead Thing play before the "Indiekitten Presents:" portion of the evening. (thanks for the drink ticket, Kendall!)

Sunshine Daydream

Michael Kingcaid was up first (why? I am not sure...I thought they played the best set that night and could have headlined). Kingcaid has a great voice and the talented musicians around him to make a sweet/gritty sound that got stuck in my head. (I can still hear them covering The Who's "My Generation")

At one point, the band (and everyone else in Club Dada) stood perfectly silent while Michael sang a beautiful tear-jerker and I had never before heard a room so full fall so quiet, it was really cool.

Up next was Jayson Bales & The Revival, who played another rockin set. This was my 3rd time to see JB & the R this month and they came through once again! Jayson is loaded with stage presence and the whole band really rocks out, which I can always appreciate. (Full photo gallery for the evening coming soon)

Closing the bill was Household Names. (Allow me to point out that my thoughts on Michael Kingcaid and Household Names are first impressions and not too much more...before Saturday, I had heard of neither.) They hooked me when they called up Paul Averitt of Hard Night's Day for "Tax Man". (video coming soon for you to see for yourself...and of the other bands too)

Club Dada took all of the strength that I had (the rain didn't help, but it was pretty cool hanging with Michael Kingcaid and company in the little bar/shack (the only covered area in the patio)) so called it a night from there and went home to prepare to rinse and repeat the next day.

Sunday morning came and soon so did the messages from people I had been hanging/drinking with letting me know just how much they were suffering (I wont name names, but it wouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to crack this case), so I headed down to the All Good Cafe for some brunch and a hangover cure (MIGAS!) My second time to be there, but my first time to actually order food and it was good. I haven't been able to catch a show there yet, but that I Love Math date looks promising. I ended up back in Deep Ellum to watch the game over at a friend's place and then called it a night.

Tuesday's Mavs game is up against the Les Claypool/Rasputina bill at the Gypsy Tea Room Ballroom, so I wont see much of the game before Sportscenter.

Have fun! Be safe! See you there!

I cant wait to see What Made Milwaukee Famous at the Gypsy. Those guys put on a great performance everytime I see them. Michael Kingcaid was definitely a headline worthy act for that evening. Its a shame he wasn't.

Aaaahhh... Yes. The Migas hit the spot that morning. I was ready for a nap after that... No such luck though.

Standard and Pours had a wonderful accoustic show. Young singer Songwriter Chris Garver sang a wonderful set of songs, He sang very earnest all original music as did Ben Fleming of the Blackheart Society. It was a very nice free show. We bought cd's to support the artists, who were first rate and put on a very nice performance despite the small crowd. That's a great spot btw, good coffee, desserts. I'd go back.

Speaking of Standard & Pours...it looks like they are putting together one of the best looking line-ups of the summer on July 15! You will definitely hear more on this from me before too long!
