Feb 13, 2008: City of McKinney cooperative; City of Irving not so much

Posted By John Meyer in Work In Progress on February 13, 2008

A rather routine day here at the ol' PegNews World HQ, with most of the staff covering their regular beats.

From Minnie comes news about the ongoing recalcitrance of the City of Irving folks, who continue to be refractory (did I mention recalcitrant?) about providing her with contact information for their top officials. Guess they've never heard of new media. (Or maybe just Pegasus News.) In contrast, the McKinney folks are providing her with everything she needs.

Regardless, Minnie will be forging ahead with an article about Barking Cat Farms.

For my own part, I'll be attempting to pull together my notes for the two films already previewed this week which both open tomorrow (Step Up 2 the Streets and Definitely, Maybe) - and I'll be getting a look at Semi-Pro tonight.

On the marathon film-viewing front, one of our three winners in the "tell us why you should be subjected to 12 straight hours of Academy Award-nominated films" contest picked up his golden ticket yesterday, and his marching orders are to take note of the experience (including descriptions of sensory overload-induced panic attacks and the peccadilloes of his fellow film-viewers). The other two winners have indicated they'll be dropping by to snatch their tics before the date of the big event.

Boo hoo, Irving is not playing fair.

Well maybe Pegasus News needs to spend a little time and google the contact information instead of whinning or how about go up to city hall?

I know so much easier to complian then do.

Once again another article on how they or someone is a victim.

I disagree with your attuide towards Irving. I think they are on the ball and becoming a better city every day.

I do like your web site and you are doing a great job but maybe you should write about news.

I'm not sure if you noticed, GSchretter, but this is simply a daily update on what PegNews staffers are working on - hence "Work In Progress". It's not like they went out of their way to post an article about Irving being jerks...

Another point is that it's just bad business to be uncooperative. Same reason people have help with their taxes even though efile is available. BUT IT'S THERE, WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE USE IT?! Forgive the cliche, but at the end of the day we're still people, and people interact.

While on the subject, and much more importantly, is there any way y'all can move WIP out of the Blogs section? It annoys me that blogs I'm actually interested in get bumped down daily by the WIP (I'm talking side-bar here).

Perhaps move WIP to the Today side-bar? Seems logical to me. Just a thought.

GSchretter:

Fair enough-- But I think the issue is that Minnie is looking for unpublished direct numbers.

Also, <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/blogs/pegasusnewsblog/2007/dec/10/where/">the point</a> of this particular blog <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/blogs/workprogress/">"Work-in-Progress"</a> is not to serve as a news source, but to pull up the curtain and share with our readers what we're working on and where it stands. And the fact is that the McKinney stuff will publish sooner because Minnie's got their cooperation.

Another reason to post this is to get input from our users, and your take on Irving is helpful as we do our reporting.

GSchretter, says:

Good point, but there might be a reason they are unpublished.

I guess my post was a little aggressive, I am sorry for that.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't there be a way to contact people who I assume were elected into public office?

Scott Doyle, says:

Well, I don't necessarily disagree with GSchretter - if they're uncooperative, the internets <a href="http://cityofirving.org/elected-officials/city-council-members.html">are handy</a>. I'm presuming those people qualify as top officials Minnie could talk to (Beth Van Duyne sticks out like a sore thumb, btw). But that doesn't mean they have to be meanie-heads.

In more important matters: WIP somewhere else? Please?

@GSchretter: No offense taken. Fair points, and good to know how we're coming off.

@Pavel: Email to a publicly available box or calling to the switchboard is a lot different from real contact to establish an interview time.

@Scott: As much as you hit the site, they move things off too quickly? Do you use RSS? You could subscribe just to Square Pegs? Will think about how to move potentially, but not as easy as it sounds...

Mike, I should be so lucky to have RSS as an option. Haven't found an aggregator that isn't blocked by the company (ones that aren't involve a download, which is also a no-go from work). Obviously most of my Peg activity is when I'm bored at my desk.

I figured moving it isn't as simple as it sounds, just a thought. I rarely read WIP unless someone comments (I honestly don't really care until it's on the site...and methinks the stuff that fell through would be more interesting, such as the Irving ordeal). But, I do make it a point to read most blog posts aside from WIP. Just lettin' ya know.
