Description

The 19th century saw a reversal of the traditional hierarchy in French art that valued figural subjects over landscape, a reversal that climaxed in Impressionism. This talk contextualizes that change in relation to anxieties about the disappearance of an idealized agrarian past and a burgeoning dealer/gallery system, taking inspiration from the landscapes presented in From Cranach to Monet: Highlights of the Pérez Simón Collection.

Curated by Dr. Janis Bergman-Carton, Associate Professor of Art History, SMU, Meadows School of the Arts.
