Description

Marty Walker Gallery presents struggle ain’t got no color, a group painting exhibition consisting of four artists whose process-driven work examines and embraces the physicality of paint as its own language, while resonating pop sensibilities.

Nick Gaetano is a Dallas artist recently re-located to LA and the gallery’s latest addition to its roster of artists. Gaetano employs a repetitive process of pouring, layering and dragging paint across the canvas, creating a degraded surface of paint much like an overcopied Xerox or crude screenprinting.

Quintin Gonzalez is a recent Harvard grad residing in Denver. Trusting the power of chance, Gonzalez’s expressions construct narratives that are direct experiences with the act of painting. The artist’s use of color and resulting language of poured paint surprisingly share charged visual commonalities with sixties drug and cartoon culture, with a slight nod to Pollack.

Zane Lewis, a San Antonio artist, contrasts meticulously detailed black ink custom-made paint by number maps with the ooze of vibrantly poured paint, examining a process-created dialogue between aspects of control and chance. Lewis was highlighted in a 2006 Wall Street Journal article on emerging artists titled 23 year-old Masters.

Angela Kallus, a Las Vegas-based painter and sculptor creates relief bulls-eye-shaped paintings, playfully named after sweet candies and ice creams. Kallus’ nostalgic color schemes visually vibrate giving “target audience” new meaning. Kallus’ work will be included in Las Vegas Diaspora, an exhibition curated by Dave Hickey to be held at the Las Vegas Art Museum in 2007.

Opening reception: Friday, December 1st, from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Main Gallery
