Yes, yes…
It’s Thursday! It’s Listening To:! It’s a free drink with paid cover, but let’s talk music for a second, shall we?
Tonight is our second week with Sean Kirkpatrick, boy wonder behind the pAper chAse and all-around spectacular solo artist. Sean played a great set last week and for those of you who were there really early last week, you got to hear Sean and Astronautalis practice for their set together later that evening. What a treat that was.
Sean’s going to kick things off at 8 tonight.
Then at 9 we’ll get the Listening To: showcase started…
Up first it’s Tiger!...Now Tiger… and I met a couple of months ago when I brought up his friends from Austin, White Denim. I instantly fell smitten with Tiger…and his blend of electronic poetry. With his wild-ass bird’s nest hair and little Casio keyboard, he blew me away. The only way to describe Tiger…is think Sylvia Plath meets Tom Waits meets I can’t believe this sound is coming out of Arlington, Texas. Hearing works like the kind Tiger produces give me a great deal of hope that well-produced, experiments in music aren’t sleeping; they’re just hiding out in unlikely cities.
Then it’s Trip Adams, who I think just might be Dallas’ answer to the all-powerful, all-rocking, all-wondermus Eaton Lake Tonics. Three piece rock band? Check. Gritty indie-rawk songs? Check. These guys kick the ass of every band they played with a couple of months ago on one of Carlin’s Tuesday night, and it was a damn shame that they had to go on at almost 1 a.m. that night. People should really start paying attention to what these boys are up to.
Finally, it’s Ashburne Glen. I had the pleasure of traveling with these fellas (a.k.a. lugging gear and setting the record for most CDs sold while hawking their merch) to Denton a while back for a show at Hailey’s with Tilly & The Wall. While I abhorred the clomping mess that was T&TW, I rather enjoyed myself while kicking back to Ashburne Glen’s set. Scissor Socket Shocker says, “A collection of loose, jangly pub rock that almost seems out of sorts with the D/FW area and its current musical climate.” While Splendid says, “I also hear a strong Belle and Sebastian echo (especially on "It Is She"), and plenty of Kinks, Smiths and Beatles worship.”
Come one, come all…It’s Thursday night, get your free drink and great music on.
