Description

Featuring Bert Truax on trumpet. Truax played second trumpet with the Dallas Symphony for 23 years. In 1986 he took a leave of absence to play Second Trumpet with the Philadelphia Orchestra for their fall season. Born in the Bay Area, Bert was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony when he was 13 years old. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Gilbert Johnson before coming to Dallas in 1976.

The Cowboys Overture (John Williams) from The Cowboys (1972).

Hooray for Hollywood! 1975. A mainly musical trip to the films and stars of the 1930's with archival footage of Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Cary Grant, Carmen Miranda, Elizabeth Taylor, Buster Keaton, even James Cagney tap-dancing and John Wayne singing. Narrated by Mickey Rooney.

American Patrol March (F.W. Meachum) Thousands Cheer (1943). Directed by George Sidney. Gene Kelly, Kathryn Grason, Mary Astor. Appearances by Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Red Skelton. Plot Summary: Acrobat Eddie Marsh is in the army now. His first act is to become friendly with Kathryn Jones, the colonel's pretty daughter...

Looney Toons - The complete what's up?

Fantasia - Mount Olympus segment. (Ludwig van Beethoven) 1940. Disney's Fantasia used Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony (Number 6) and delicate color styling to depict a mythical ancient Grecian world of the gods of Mount Olympus, centaurs and, a special Disney invention, centaurettes This portion of the film was criticized for brief yet blatant nudity on the part of the centaurettes. The Lewisville Lake Symphony will be playing the full symphony in the April 20, 2007 concert but without centaurettes. Sorry.

Hymn to the Fallen (John Williams) - Saving Private Ryan (1998).

The Carnival of Venice - Il Carevale di Venezia (1928). Directed by Mario Almirante. Alex Bernard, Maria Jacobini. The folk tune has popularly associated with the words "My hat, it has three corners" (which sounds more ominously profound in Italian.) It was worked into the musical accompaniment for the silent movie. A series of theme and variations have been written for solo trumpet, as "show off" pieces that contain virtuosic displays of double and triple tonguing and fast tempi.

Hollywood Blockbusters (James Horner) - Music from Apollo 13, Braveheart, Titanic and other Horner scores.

Suite for Trumpet and Strings (William Latham) - The music that’s ready for its close-up. William Latham was a professor at UNT's College of Music. Hear the music, imagine the movie that demands it on the soundtrack.

Adults $20; senior (60+) $18; student $8
