Dallas Video Festival - ‘Phantom Canyon’
August 5, 2007
A young woman encounters enormous insects and an alluring man with bat wings in this surreal recollection of a pivotal journey. Made by photographing over 4000 handmade collages with imagery taken from copyright free 18th and 19th century engravings and the figures of Eadweard Muybridge's human motion studies, this animated film explores memories, dreams and the nature of reflection. Shot in 35mm black and white film, the project took over 4 years to complete.Unlike most collage animation, this film was not made by moving paper under the camera. Each collage (typically 8 per second) is an individual piece of artwork. This allowed for far greater detail and fluidity of movement than is usually associated with this technique.
