Social Security
August 11, 2007
Social Security is set in the hyper-chic New York art world of the 1980s, where David and Barbara Kahn are riding high as top-tier gallery owners. Fortyish and happily childless, they devote their days and evenings to socializing with art stars, seeing and being seen in the best circles. Then Barbara’s sister Trudy and her husband Martin—dreary Long Island suburbanites—drop a bomb: they can no longer take care of Barbara and Trudy’s cranky, demanding and feeble mother, Sophie, and must leave her to live with the Kahns-- immediately. David and Barbara’s driven, tidy and upscale way of life is turned upside-down by the arrival of this crotchety, critical septuagenarian widow, and things get even more shocking when the Kahns’ star artist, a ninety-eight-year-old European icon named Maurice Koenig, meets Sophie, and sparks start to fly where none were thought possible.
CTD is taking this chance to revel in all the delightful silliness, glitz, music, fashions and pretensions of the 80s, from giant shoulder pads to “blank” paintings. The design team is throwing itself into this world with glee
Rated PG-13 for adult language and situations. $10 student rush tickets go on sale to students with ID 15 minutes before curtain. Purchase tickets online or by calling 214-828-0094.
