Democracy
January 27, 2007
When an underdog political candidate unexpectedly won a popular election in West Germany in 1969, he was not only confronted with skeptics, but he also realizes that it is increasingly difficult to identify friends from foes in his half of divided Germany. Charismatic Willy Brandt knew that intrigue, duplicity, conniving, and spying were all clearly going on within his most intimate inner circle. But toward what end? For what cause? And most importantly, by whom? Is this how democracy works?
