Dr. Robert Gatchel lecture: Management of Chronic Pain
January 31, 2007
Did you know that chronic pain is one of the most prevalent and costly medical problems in the United States today? Approximately 10-20% of adults in the general population experience chronic pain, and the total estimated healthcare costs to Americans are more than $70 billion per year. Fortunately, recent advances in pain research have led to the development of more effective chronic pain management programs. Such "cutting edge" research and treatment programs will be discussed.
Robert J. Gatchel, Ph.D., ABPP is the Chair of the Department of Psychology at UT Arlington and Program Director of the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He will discuss recent developments in the management of chronic pain at this first Focus on Faculty for the Spring semester. Meet in the Central Library sixth floor parlor at noon for the talk.
Dr. Gatchel's recent awards include the American Psychological Association's 2004 Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research, the 2006 John Liesbeskind Pain Management Award from the American Academy of Pain Management and the UT Arlington's 2006 Distinguished Record of Research Achievement Award. He has published over 250 articles, 84 book chapters, authored or edited 23 books, and also serves on the editorial boards of numerous psychological and medical journals.
Light refreshments will be served.
