Description
Both history and logic would suggest that a culture's wisdom comes from its elders and that a healthy, enduring society is one in which those elders pass down to following generations the wisdom for which they are respected. American society, though, seems to hold a contrary view, being overly attentive to--some would say obsessive about--the things of youth, and inattentive--some would say oblivious--to the things of old age.
How are we to understand this phenomenon of revering youthfulness and neglecting or even shunning old age? Is this a natural tendency, or does it reveal our consumer culture's self-deception about the most basic realities of human existence--that is, of life and death? What does our collective emphasis on youthfulness reveal about the health of American society? What does it portend for the future?
During this series, speakers from the humanities, medicine, and journalism will focus on these and other questions. Each session will feature a 30-40 minute talk, then a conversation involving, first, individuals from different disciplines and, then, the entire audience. The series will begin with Institute Fellow Dr. Louise Cowan and culminate with National Book Award winner Dr. Sherwin Nuland, whose new book The Art of Aging will be released in late February.
