Typical Spain: Icons of Spanish Fashion from the Golden Age
May 4, 2007
Fashion trends and national power go hand-in-glove. At the height of Spain’s international dominance in the 16th century, a distinctive Spanish style of dress emerged—a style denounced by its critics and beloved by its wearers for its opulent and seductive qualities. Dr. Amanda Wunder, Asst. Professor of History, University of New Hampshire, will explore the icons of the Spanish style (including the veil, the farthingale, and the passion for black) that were captured by Golden-Age artists like Pantoja de la Cruz, Valázquez, and Carreño de Miranda, whose works are represented in the Meadows collection.
In the Dr. Bob Smith Auditorium. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
