The Five Donahues (Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Donald O'Connor, Mitzi Gaynor, and Johnnie Ray) work their way from vaudeville to Broadway, singing plenty of Irving Berlin songs on the way. Sooner or later, though, the family act must break up - in this case, due to an ambitious singer played by Marilyn Monroe.
