R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)

The play, first produced in 1921, is widely credited with popularizing the word “robot.” The Czech word “robota” means “drudgery” or “servitude.” The robots– actually androids to modern audiences– were created to do work humans did not want to do and are generally exploited. The robots are given sentience and eventually rebel against their creators, destroying all the humans on Earth except one.

Capek’s drama questions the meaning of humanity, explores class stratification and offers poignant warnings against seemingly omnipotent corporations and the dangers of misusing technology.

A bit longer than I anticipated - about 2 hours and 15 mins including intermission.

Certainly an interesting one.

The play kind of tailed off at the end. The second and third acts was good, but it must be pretty tough to act like a robot, because the ending was very underwhelming.

Oh, and they actually use a real gun on the set, with blanks. I didn't know which of the several was the real one until the "shooting" started, so every time one of the prop ones was pointed at the audience, I winced a little.

They had a sign that said a real gun would be fired with blanks, btw. Learn2read.

I'd never heard a gun fired indoors without some kind of ear protection. Much louder than I thought. The dude was at least 20 yards away and my ears were still ringing a couple of minutes after the shots. Definitely makes me think twice about a lot of movie scenes.

I saw the sign. What about my comment made it look like I was surprised when it started going off?

And yeah, that thing was ridiculously loud.

Scott Doyle, says:

Why would you wince if you knew they'd be blanks? You're no Brandon Lee.

Hey, I don't know if any of the actors have pissed off a Triad before. UTD is full of students of asian descent. For all I know, there were fifty ninjas in the rafters, acting as a back-up.
