Description
(Romania, 2007, 140 mins)
In French, Romanian with English subtitles
Directed By: NAE CARANFIL
Writer-director Nae Caranfil’s epic tale set in 1911 Bucharest is a wonderful treat for film buffs. The whole feel of the film is grand; from the beautiful costumes to the sweeping score, Caranfil should be applauded for pulling off such a visual treat.
Nineteen-year-old Grig (Marius Florea Vizante) can’t make it as a stage actor like his famous father, so he decides to make the biggest, the longest, most spectacular moving picture ever. His subject is the 1877 war against the Ottoman Empire that gave Romania its independence. As any filmmaker has learned, the struggle between business and art can be bumpy and in this case, loads of fun.
Caranfil’s script is based on real events, and excerpts of the partially restored 1912 Romanian movie on which it is based can be seen through out the film.
This grand period piece sets out to prove to the stage snobs that cinema has a bright future and is a justified art form.
