Roy 'Mad Dog' Earle (Humphrey Bogart) has been sprung from prison to participate in a heist, but this is not an ordinary caper film. Through his relationships with a disabled young woman and with the girlfriend of one of the other gang members, Earle begins to realize what he has missed in life - but it may be too late to alter his fate.
