The American Association of University Women is celebrating its 100th anniversary in Texas in Dallas,TX, April 25-27, 2008. Register by April 2, 2008, for reduced rates. Go to the website for details and to register.
The luncheon and dinner on Saturday, April 26, feature the work of the Educational Foundation of the Association and the Legal Advocacy Fund. Dr. Maxine Hammonds-Smith, current President of the National Council on Family Relations and a longtime resident of Houston, will keynote the Educational Foundation Luncheon on “The Legacy of Barbara Jordan: what’s left undone.” Keynote speaker at the Legal Advocacy Fund dinner will be Roderick Jackson, an Alabama coach who was plaintiff in an AAUW-supported lawsuit to offer equal sports opportunities to high school girls. After years of being denied by the courts, he won a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003: protecting the rights of employees to speak up about discrimination without fear of harassment.
100 Women of Distinction will be recognized. A 100th birthday celebration will also highlight the dinner event. A Graduate Research Poster Session will highlight the work of university graduate students in the Southwest who are addressing issues of interest to the enlightenment and advancement of women.
