Description

Skepticism is the hallmark of our early 21st century culture. New media seem to appear weekly in the halls of contemporary art spaces. But each new technique is often greeted by the public's lack of acceptance. In 17th century Rome, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio led the vanguard in creating a new aesthetic. As his prominence grew, so did his experimentation, leading many of his greatest commissions to be rejected by their patrons. In this talk, we will look at how Caravaggio's daring experiments opened the doors to an art that challenged its patrons rather than appeased them. The repercussions of this radical concept are still resonating today.
