The UNT Art Gallery presents A Place in the Painting Continuum, featuring digitally and mechanically produced artworks that embody the elements and traditions of painting and call into question their status as a photograph, digital print, or video—thus suggesting a place or a moment in the evolution of painting.
Today's artists work under the premise that anything can be used as creative media, but realistically they must still determine language in their practices. Fridge, Huang and Saunders are driven by personal pragmatism and interest, and the images they create combine new technology and contemporary aesthetics with a sense of the Romantic or of Symbolist expression. In this way, A Place in the Painting Continuum reveals the potential for grand narrative in contemporary media. Moreover, because few people are exempt from the impact of digital images so recently pervasive in daily life, the exhibition offers opportunities to experience artworks by established artists whose approaches reveal new ways to consider the digital.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
