The Dallas Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC Dallas) is celebrating its 75th anniversary on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the Stoneleigh Hotel. A commemorative brunch will recognize outstanding women who have advanced the practice of communications in Dallas and beyond, while honoring many of the chapter’s longstanding members and past presidents. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Cheryl Diaz Meyer will be the headline speaker.
“This event will reunite many of the extraordinary women communicators who have been proud members of AWC and WICI over the years,” said Leslie Bryan-Spradlin, AWC Dallas president. “We are honored to welcome Cheryl Diaz Meyer, who embodies the qualities of creativity, excellence and leadership, as our 75th Anniversary headliner.”
Ms. Diaz Meyer won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography with fellow Dallas Morning News staff photographer David Leeson for their “eloquent photographs depicting both the violence and poignancy of the war with Iraq.”
She covered the war in Iraq as an embedded journalist attached to the Second Tank Battalion of the First Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She has returned to Iraq numerous times since the invasion, covering stories about the capture of Saddam Hussein, religious fanaticism in Basra, and female self-immolations in Kurdistan.
