Opening Reception - Collections, Cultures and Collaborations

Collections, Cultures and Collaborations is a faculty initiated exhibition for which graduate students at the College of Visual Arts and Design devoted a semester of research on selected works from the previously unstudied permanent collection of the University of North Texas Art Gallery. Graduate art history students who were enrolled in a methodologies course applied their developing knowledge about historical and contemporary methods of studying art and visual culture to writing scholarly interpretive text for the each artwork or series of works. In collaboration with these students, graduate students who were enrolled in a museum education course created an on-line learning module that allows viewers of the exhibition to explore select works on display in depth.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Dr. Steven Conn , Professor and Director of the Public History Program in the Department of History at Ohio State University will be giving a lecture “Permanent Collections in Regional and National Contexts” and leading a workshop “Collections, Cultures and Collaborations: Do We Need Objects Anymore?”
