January 17, 2008
, 2008
Guest speaker Elizabeth Kornhauser, Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn., will consider America’s first national school of landscape art which emerged between 1825 and 1875. This group of artists, known as the Hudson River School, depicted the newly-settled landscape as a pastoral setting on large canvases, and created a distinctive style that became the premier focus of painting in the United States.
