George Michael

George Michael will be bringing his 25 LIVE tour to North American Arenas in the summer of 2008 in support of his new retrospective record. This will be Michael's first North American tour in 17 years. The new record, titled Twenty-Five, will be released April 1st and is a 29-song, 2-CD set featuring several new songs (including duets with superstars Paul McCartney and Mary J. Blige) in addition to many of Michael's iconic songs from both his solo and WHAM! career. In addition, a companion 2-disc DVD of 40 videos will also be made available.

The North American leg of the 25 LIVE tour will kick off in San Diego on June 17th and will continue through San Jose, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New York and several other major cities. The tour will incorporate 22 shows over the course of seven weeks and Michael will perform material taken from the entire span of his career, including some classic Wham! tracks. Michael has recently teamed up with iTunes and Ticketmaster to produce a package which allows fans rare access to Michael’s videos, songs, and tickets to one of his North American 25 LIVE concerts. The package goes on sale on iTunes on March 25th. Tickets to the 25 LIVE tour will go on sale to the general public the weekend of April 6th.

George Michael has enjoyed one of the most successful and enduring careers in the history of pop music, selling more than 85 million records globally and encompassing seven US No. 1 singles, two Grammy awards, three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and two prestigious Ivor Novello awards for songwriting. His record "Faith" has sold over 20 million copies alone. In addition, Michael has garnered 11 British No. 1 singles and seven British No. 1 albums. He recently was declared the most played British artist on radio over the course of the last 20 years. On March 27th, Michael can be seen making his American acting debut on the new hit ABC series, Eli Stone, in which each episode is titled after one of his songs.

Starting a full hour later than the "8pm prompt" on the event ticket, Michael emerged to "Fastlove," followed by "I'm your man" featuring vintage Wham! video on three floor-to-ceiling video screens.

Catherine Cuellar says:

Sounding as good as the day he recorded "Father Figure" GM told the Dallas audience that "Thanks to [his partner] Kenny [Goss], it's like coming home." He thanked his fans for their "f'ing amazing" 25 years of support, then promised to "work his ass off" for the next 2 1/2 to 3 hours before launching into "Hard Day" from Faith, a song excluded from his European tour.

Catherine Cuellar says:

Despite the irony of the lyrics under present-day circumstances, he revived the original arrangement of Wham's "Everything She Wants," followed by a gospel-tinged rendition of "One More Try" with harmony vocal from half a dozen African-American back-up singers.

After a 20 minute intermission, George Michael returned to the stage with the title track from his solo debut "Faith" and called Dallas his best f'ing audience.

How do you know they were 'African-American?'

After reaffirming the audience is f'ing amazing, he sang an a capella intro to a Nina Simone cover -- "Feeling Good" as recorded for the finale of Eli Stone.

Another cover, a lounge-y low-key cover of "Roxanne" by the Police, complete with video footage from Amsterdam.

Catherine Cuellar says:

Point taken Clay213 - the backing vocalists are black, and on that song were singing in the African-American gospel choral style.
Roxanne was followed by a similar-sounding original, "Kissing A Fool." He then complained the A/C was too cold and affecting his voice (dropping a couple more F bombs). He then performed "Amazing" -- written for and dedicated to his partner Kenny.
My battery is almost dead...to be continued.

A not-so-ambiguous gay duo: "Beautiful" (which GM said he considers one of his best records) followed by "Outside" -- after which he bid Dallas goodnight more than two hours after he began. Encores are certain.

Concluding @ 11:30 after two giant crowd singalongs -- "Careless Whisper" and "Freedom '90" he was forgiven by audiences for waiting 17 years. Thanks to Kathy Nealy for the primo seats three rows in front of Kenny Goss!

He had his mojo going and was shaking his ass like most of the crowd was. Excellent show, good times.

Good setlist, only complaint was missing "I want your sex".

Alex Bentley says:

Nice pic, Catherine -- those video screens were pretty freaking cool. Couldn't believe that there were literally hundreds of people streaming out before the encores and after Careless Whisper. People, lights down = show goes on -- has nobody ever been to a concert before?
