Karl Umlauf- Natural Evolution: Examining the artists` organic environment and artistic evolution over the past 50 years. Ft. Worth Community Arts Center, Ft. Worth, Texas, June 6-June 28, 2008
Artist and teacher for almost 50 years, Karl Umlauf is a nationally and internationally recognized artist and a Texas Legend. Karl’s artwork is found in over 40 museums and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, N.Y., the Modern Museum of Art, New York City, N.Y. and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX. While attending the University of Texas, Karl studied under some of the great artists of the time. Among these artists were Everett Spruce, Loren Mozley, William Lester and Kelly Fearing. Karl received his B.F.A. from the University of Texas, Austin, TX, in 1961 and his M.F.A. from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1963.
New York provided great success and recognition to Karl, something many artists only dream of. Had he chosen to stay in New York he was virtually assured of fame and fortune. However, Karl’s idea of fame and accomplishment was not centered in his own but in helping others reach their goals and ambitions.
So Karl chose to return to his beloved Texas to teach at the University level and pursue his artistic career. Among the many prestigious positions Karl holds are Professor of Art for 22 years at East Texas State University and presently Artist-in-Residence at Baylor University, a position he has held for 19 years.
