From Power to Empowerment: Critical Literacy in Visual Culture
International Visual Literacy Conference
When: Friday, June 6, 2008, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Universities Center at Dallas, 1901 Main Street Suite 107, Dallas

Description
Sponsored by the College of Visual Arts & Design at UNT, this two-day conference is the first in a hoped for series of inter- and multi-disciplinary conferences examining visual literacy as it is shaped by and shapes social forces and institutions including education, politics, ethics, technology, media, marketing, commerce, the environment, and society, as well as identity and subjectivity. Visual literacy might best be described as the ability to understand and use visual images to create meaning, manipulate contexts and communicate with others. Participants from a variety of disciplines would have the opportunity to share knowledge with one another about visual literacy across its many dimensions.
