Description

Presented by Pegasus News.

Mates of State is the organ and drums, vocal-laden duo of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel. The band essentially began in 1997. After a few months in the midwest, they high-tailed it out to a new home in San Francisco. California greeted them with sunshine, pop sounds, and a great music community.

Their long-standing motto of "Play anywhere, anytime" allowed them to play everywhere from Oakland parties to venues up and down the west coast. Kori (organ, vox) and Jason (drums, vox) quit their day jobs as a teacher and cancer researcher in 2001, got married, and hit the road bringing their love to the rest of the world. They've toured the US, Europe and Japan and by the looks of it, won't stop any time soon.

The Mates have released five 7" records and two full lengths, "My Solo Project" and "Our Constant Concern." Polyvinyl Records will be releasing the third full length record entitled "Team Boo" in September of 2003. It was recorded at Pedernales Studio in Texas with John Croslin (GBV, Spoon, Waylon Jennings, Pavement) and Jim Eno (Spoon).

It's difficult to place MOS in a genre as the song structures are unique, often complex. At the same time there are always the pop elements of catchy melodies and loads of harmony. Even though there are only two of them, they fill up the space with the monster, bass-heavy organ, creative drumming, and constant dueling vocals. The music can be sweet. At other times it's spastic, but either way, you leave MOS shows with a warm feeling.

Mates of State has been described by critics as unabashed joy, honesty at its best, a two piece with balls, and a band that you must see live. Their first record was listed in the New York Times as one of the best records you probably didn't hear in 2000. Their shows consist of packed crowds singing, smiling, and dancing and, of course, the private jokes between Kori and Jason.

Something went screwy here. PegNews says show starts at 9 and yesterday morning I double checked on the Granada site and it said doors at 8 and show at 9. I show up just past 9 to see Headlights and they had already finished and the Black Joe Lewis was almost finished with their set! WTF!?

I get home and look at the Granada site and it says doors at 7 and show at 8. Grumble..funny business...grumble.

Oh well.

Same thing happened at Datarock / Ladytron... it seems that pegasus news is off by an hour.

We put the same start times that venues provide to us, and while we do our best to make sure those times remain correct, sometimes venues will change them without our knowledge.

When you see a start time on a music event remember that's the time the show starts. Doors typically open an hour prior to a music event. So, that might be what you (Pavel) are thinking as far as being an hour off. Again, these might be two events that the start time changed since we imported them into our system. For certain venues, we will list shows months in advance, meaning there's a lot of time there for things to happen and times to change. If we are not informed of the time change, unfortunately, with hundreds of music events any given day (not counting all the other types of events) we might never learn about it.

A good rule is to show up early whenever you can (not always possible, I know) b/c of the large number of things that can throw a schedule off. Typically, the beer starts flowing as soon as the doors open, and I've found that a couple of drinkies can make the time before the band takes the stage pass by quite nicely.

I hope that helps. Sorry, xdavidwattsx, that you missed much of the show. Our intern, who was forced to be there VERY early has written a review, focusing largely on the opening act, if that can console you any.

I genuinely think they changed the time at the last minute cause I am almost willing to put money down that I saw doors at 8 and show at 9 on the Granada site yesterday. Sneaky little suckas.

I've always been a fan of The New Yorker's disclaimer:

"Musicians and night-club proprietors live complicated lives; it’s advisable to call ahead to confirm engagements."

It varies from show to show, but at the Granada, barring contrary info, it's usually safe to assume that the first opener goes on at 8:00.

I can remember when that same disclaimer was used in the Dallas Observer's listings.
